Run entirely through Apple’s Home app, HomeKit doesn’t require you have a central device or hub to run a smart home. While that may come across as proprietary nonsense when it comes to audio, as it applies to connected home technology, it’s smart and secure. In other words, when you say “Unlock the door” to Siri, that command gets encrypted by your phone, it’s sent through the web, and finally lands at your lock, where it’s decrypted. Apple already has designed the Apple Homekit ecosystem, which allows iOS users to take complete control of their connected home.

It's not just a missing product; Apple has seemed flat-out unwilling to make household voice control for HomeKit more accessible. That brazen refusal to keep pace with competitors rightly makes HomeKit customers nervous -- that their platform might forego other innovations or that Apple's slow approach could disincentivize partnerships. This can include household members coming or going, a time of day, an accessory being controlled, or a sensor detecting something.
As soon as you open the app, you can add new devices, new routines or new automations with one or two taps and no scrolling whatsoever. The app also gives easy access to your existing smart home -- devices, routines and automations -- to activate, edit and delete as you desire. If other people with Apple devices share your home, you can invite them to be members of your HomeKit household with the plus menu’s Add People option, which sends out email invitations with links and instructions.
Siri knows which HomeKit accessories are set up in the Home app as well as their status. Siri identifies your accessories by their names, location, and other details that you've added to them in the Home app. And if you set up a HomePod2, Apple TV, or iPad as a home hub, you can use Siri to control your home from just about anywhere.
